Black Student Union hosts “Family Reunion” cookout

The Black Student Union is hosting a “Family Reunion” event on Saturday, April 23 at 3 p.m. at the Forum. This event will provide games, food and music as an opportunity for Lee students to relax before exams.

James White, a senior psychology major, serves as the BSU president and said the Family Reunion cookout is an opportunity to include the Lee community in Black culture.

“Traditionally, in Black culture, cookouts are a really big thing our families take part in, but we call it the Family Reunion because we wanted it to be a place where all clubs, all races, all ethnicities feel as if they are welcome," said White. "You don’t have to be just a Black student to come, and you do not have to be a diversity club to come.”

White hopes the event serves as a “melting pot” of various campus groups. The event is intended to unify Lee through the participation of students from different cultures.

Alongside the BSU, other clubs are partnering to make the event possible and bring different areas of campus together. Many of the diversity clubs will be representing their cultures by providing their own food. The clubs participating include the Leetinos, Asian Council, Evangelistic Singers, Lee Prayer, Pi Kappa Pi and Upsilon Xi.

Lindsey Ross, a freshman nursing major, serves as the vice president of the BSU. Ross said the event will integrate areas of campus through a variety of activities requiring teams, such as slip and slide kickball, cornhole, spikeball and tug of war. 

“We’re going to try to integrate them," Ross said of the various groups and clubs. "It’s like getting to know each other, and our differences, and about different club stuff too, so we can help support each other.”
