1. Madeleine Albright, first female secretary of state, dies

Madeleine Albright, the first female secretary of state, died Wednesday, March 23, of cancer. She was 84.
As secretary of state, Albright was the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government.
“Albright was chosen in 1996 by President Bill Clinton to be America’s top diplomat, elevating her from U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, where she had been only the second woman to hold that job,” reports AP News.
In the 1970s, Albright served on the National Security Council under the Carter administration. Under former President Bill Clinton, she was appointed U.S. ambassador to the UN. In 1997, she became the first female secretary of state — with support from a unanimous Senate.
President Joe Biden ordered flags at the White House and other federal buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff until March 27.
“Hers were the hands that turned the tide of history,” said Biden.
2. Howard University negotiates labor deal with faculty after strike threat

On Wednesday, Service Employees Internation Union Local 500 agree to stop the planned three-day walkout at Howard University. The university and the union reached a tentative three-year agreement to negotiate better working conditions.
“Faculty members in the union had been fighting for an agreement for about three years. Adjunct professors and full-time non-tenured professors were seeking better pay, the ability to teach enough courses to access Howard's health insurance and ending a rule under which non-tenure track faculty are let go after seven years,” reports NPR.
The tentative pact is awaiting a vote of ratification by a union membership to take place.
In honor of the labor deal being agreed upon, a celebration rally took place on Howard’s campus.
3. Lee Creation Care Club to host recycling, environmentalism and conservation talk

On Monday, March 28, the Lee Creation Care Club will host a discussion about recycling, environmentalism and conservation. A professional in the Tennessee State Parks Department will be speaking.
Lee Creation Care Club caters to preserving the planet and bettering the environment. Anyone is welcome to attend.
The event will be held in the Humanities building room 207 at 5:30 p.m.
