1. Sunday starts Lee University’s Convocation sessions 

Lee University’s fall Convocation series begins on Sunday Sept. 11. Convocation is a bi-annual series of evening services where students are able to worship and pray for the upcoming semester. 

Starting at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, President Dr. Mark Walker will kick off convocation with this year’s theme of “Transformation.” Monday Sept. 12, Ms. Lauren Bunkner will be speaking, Tuesday Sept. 13 will be led by Lee alumnus Rich Wilkerson Jr., and Lee alumnus Jason Browning will be closing Convocation on Wednesday Sept 14th. 

“For decades, Convocation has been a special week of spiritual focus and formation on Lee’s campus,” said Dr. Brad Moffett, vice president for University Relations. “The entire Campus Ministries team, Dr. Walker, and I are praying for the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to work in the lives of our students, faculty, and staff.  We have a great line-up of speakers this semester, and I look forward to hearing from each of them as they challenge our community to allow God to work in and through our lives.”

2. Two dead in Bradley County plane crash 

On Monday Sept. 5, a plane crashed on the Bradley/Polk County line and the pilot and passenger were both found dead at the site. On Sept. 6, these two individuals were confirmed to have been pilot William Edward Gist and his wife Beth Ann Gist. 

The Gists were residents of Asheville, North Carolina, and had flown to Arlington, Texas for Labor Day weekend. The plane was owned by Mountain Flyers Flying Club based out of Asheville. Despite the crash, President of Mountain Flyers, Bill Keith, said the conditions were all good for the couple to fly back to Asheville. 

ABC News Channel 9 reports that there is currently no official cause of the crash and there is no expected timeline for the investigation.

3. New UK prime minister tasked with alleviating economic crisis   

Newly appointed U.K. prime minister, Liz Truss, is entering her role in a period of economic unsurety. With an impending energy crisis and inflation at an all time high of 10%, Truss has a heavy burden on her shoulders. 

Truss, formerly the foreign secretary for the Conservative Party, was formally appointed as Prime Minister on Tuesday, Sept. 6, by Queen Elizabeth II. In Truss’ debut speech, she addressed the concerns surrounding the impending energy crisis in the U.K., stating that she will be capping energy prices and will be lowering taxes in order to encourage economic growth.

“We shouldn’t be daunted by the challenges we face,” Truss said in her first speech as prime minister. “As strong as the storm may be, I know the British people are stronger.”

The Associated Press reports that Truss will be revealing her plan deal with the energy crisis on Thursday Sept. 8.
