Steve Long from Toronto Blessing heretical altar call!

I recently saw this altar call by Steve Long, leader of Catch the Fire that used to Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship or home of the Toronto Blessing in the 1990’s. However, there is a major problem with it: it is theologically wrong. What he believes redemption is does not come from the Word of God.

The church in Toronto and really the wider Vineyard under John Wimber does not thrive on sound doctrine. A look at what they believe against the New Testament would not end well. However, to get the gospel wrong is a big problem. Let’s see exactly what he had to say.

So the gospel to Steve Long is about:

  • Behavior
  • Moral Standing
  • Financial dealings
  • Sexual history

The problem with this to start is that none of these matters. The gospel is not based on any of this but it is based on repenting of sins, turn from wickedness and believing in Jesus. When a man is regenerated, he is a new creation and all these stuff is removed from the man’s dealing. Old things have passed away and new things have come. Nicky Cruz murdered people. Steve Hill was a drug addict. The list goes on. Steve Long really seems to have forgotten about redemption here.

What about being holy?

Besides calling Revelation the revelation of John (not Jesus) and saying they have been crying holy for 2,000 years and not eternity; let’s look at how he defines being holy. Is it really the absence of God and having the purity of God? It is actually the word, hagios, which means to be set apart or living differently. It is not just the absence of fornication, fraud, corruption, and being a bad neighbor. You can do all of those and still not be holy. There are athiests out there that do all of those but will still burn in hell.

The concept of holiness is when you are different. You serve Jesus, not the things of this world. You worship the Lord, not prosperity. That’s what personal holiness means.

Sorry, Steve Long. This is the not the gospel.

It is simple.

  • Repent of your sins.
  • Confess Jesus as Savior.
  • Receive regeneration.
  • Receive Instantaneous Sanctification.
