President Biden plans to visit the U.S. border with Mexico this weekend. The White House says it will try to crack down on the flood of crossings which topped 2.7 million people in 2022.
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy’s woes continue, as the vote for House speaker stalemated again after 11 ballots. The delay for swearing in the 118th Congress is now at three days and counting.
Ukraine rejected a unilateral weekend truce announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Orthodox Christmas holiday. Kyiv said it suspects Putin would use the truce to regroup and bolster forces for the war.
And Idaho’s Supreme Court ruled the state’s near-total ban on abortion is constitutional. The decision came just days after a South Carolina court struck down that state’s abortion law.
