Although there is debate, the stronger arguments favor the idea that at least some of Jesus’s Jewish contemporaries expected gentiles to immerse themselves when converting to Judaism. John the Baptist also used water immersion as a form of purification, prefiguring the greater One’s Spirit immersion (Mark 1:8; Ezek 36:25-27).
