Through a block party and partnering with several clubs around campus, Lee University will celebrate the variety of cultures and experiences that make up the Lee student body on Friday, Nov. 11, during Culture Fest, themed “Kingdom Here.”

“[The music groups are] going to show us . . . what [it looks] like to have heaven here on earth. They'll be singing ‘Hallelujah’ by Sunday Service and ‘Kingdom’ by Maverick City Music and Jazz Band will be performing different pieces from around the globe,” said Tehilah Gichuru, junior human development major and president of Mosaic Council.

Performers will include EVS, Campus Choir and Jazz Band, and there will also be a fashion show and talent portion of the evening.

Black Student Union, Lee University African Student Association, Asian Council, International Student Fellowship and MU KAPPA are among the clubs who will participate in the event.

Following the event will be a block party at the Paul Conn Student Union. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“I am looking forward to getting to see all of the different clubs express their cultures and be proud of all our differences in one shared space,” said Briza ReyesCruz, president of Leetinos.

Leetinos, the Lee University club honoring Latin American culture, has been working on decorations and food for the celebration, including the fashion and talent show.

“They're going to be showcasing some of the classical traditional outfits … and then we're also going to have a table with some food and different things from the Hispanic culture. We're super excited about it,” said Daniel Toombs, treasurer and chaplain of Leetinos.

Culture Fest began about ten years ago for international students as a “celebration of their culture,” said Gichuru. “It is the one day where international students or students of different cultures, whether you're in the states or outside, are able to express who they truly are without the borders of it looking weird.”

Mosaic Council will be recognizing veterans who have been invited from the community during the event for Veterans day this year. A few international students whose parents served in the military will be celebrated as well.
