‘Planet killer’ asteroid found hiding in sun’s glare with potential to one day collide with Earth. The 0.9-mile-wide (1.5 kilometers) asteroid is the largest potentially hazardous asteroid spotted in the past 8 years. Astronomers dubbed it a “planet killer” because effects of its impact would be felt across multiple continents. It will cross Earth’s orbit at some point, and it isn’t known yet how dangerous it could be. By the time such a planet-destroying rock appears, the global space community hopes to have tools to protect the planet.
