Some churches teach beards are wrong. Is it Biblical?

  1. The Old Testament speaks of the Messiah polling his beard, which meant shaved. The NT is not specific but I think a man looks better without facial hair. There is also a Scripture, I have to look, that says that the Messiah was clean shaven.

    1. Actually Isaiah was saying that his beard was pulled (or plucked) by the ones torturing him. There is NO scripture that says the messiah was clean shaven. In fact, most of the men of God in the Bible including the Messiah had beards.

  2. Holiness churches in the 1960s and 1970s thought beards were too worldly, too “hippie-like.” My parents and church thought I had gone liberal when I went off to college in 1969 and grew a beard.

  3. Leviticus 19 v 27 pretty much biblical to me.
613 laws the church’s only teach white Jesus and 10 commandments.

I hope you people study to show thy self approved and not rely on not 501c3 church

  4. It depends on which verse in the bible one chooses to look at. The apostle Paul says, “Men should have short hair.” The Nazerite vow says, “Men should not cut their hair or beards.”

This is one issue that is not cut and dry, such as murder. This is one of them debated issues such as speaking in tongues or capital punishment, in which, I believe, the bible gives conflicting information.

  5. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

    1 Corinthians 11:16 | KJV

  6. The 12 tribes of Israel not the heathens. It’s states very clear not to go the way of the heathens. You people can shave not I.

  7. Moody Bible Insittute forbids facial hair, but in obby of thier main building is a portrait of their founder, whose beard went down past his breastbone LOL

  8. I have never seen IT in the Bible. It teaches if a man have long hair hair it’s a shame 1 st Corinthians 11:14. Says , Does not even nature itself teach you, that if a man have long hair. It is a shame unto him. (15) But if a woman have long hair , it is a glory to her , for her hair is given her for a covering.

  9. Well in every paining and picture I’ve seen Jesus had a beard… so I’d say no if it were wrong God would not have given man the ability to grow one

  10. The bible says they plucked out Jesus’ beard! Come on people, wake up and find other issues that are more important, like helping reach souls for Christ!

  11. Just because it was associated with hippie rebellion in the 60s and 70s. The thought that we are to be “Clean” shaven. It is a doctrine of men.

  12. This Is How It Is—Its Not A Sin Either Way! Its What Ever The Men Desire To Do! Just Like The Women Folks: If U Want To Wear A Head Covering “Aka” Scarf? Then Do It: Otherwise Tje Head Covering Mentioned In The Bible Is A Womans Hair: Because A Womans Hair Is Her Glory! If A Man Wants A Beard Then Go For It! If Not; Then Shave! People Wants To Control Peoples Every Move So Badly That They Strain At A Knat And Swallow A Camel! They Cause The People To Wear “Spiritual Shackles”! Burdens! When People Come To God: Most Times Its A Slow Change To The New Found Walk! Dress Code; Turning From Sin Etc. But The More Important Matters Are ((Salvation))! My Recommendation Is ((The Authorized King James Bible))! Its The True Bible!! Seemingly Most Men In The Bible Wore Beards And Mustaches? But They Didnt Have The Modern Day Shave Equipment Then Like We Do Now! Just Like The Apparell//Clothes Was Different Back Then Than Now! But Holiness Is The Same Yesterday-Today And Forever! Because God Himself Created It All!

  13. If You Follow The Authorized King James Bible: You Cant Lose! If You Truly Seek Gods Face: Prayers And Reading Gods Word! You Will Get Your Answers! I Dont Usually Say Much! But People Needs To Know! And Facebook Is An Opportunity To Do Sharing Gods Work!

  14. The whole question is sort of silly, unless you are into legalism. Beards and outward appearance mean nothing. God looks at the heart.

  15. It is pointless to argue such nonsense. If a man wants to have a beard then fine! If a man wants to be clean shaven then fine! Neither way defines spirituality in any way.

  16. We should be preaching CHRIST CRUCIFIED and seeing souls saved instead of churches argueing weather beards are right or wrong!

  17. The bible never addresses facial hair as sin. Many churches have a dress code as part of their identity and mission to the world.

  18. BIG thanks to all participants – yall are just GREAT

This post was a social media experiment on how evangelicals assume things and fire up the commenting guns.:)

  19. There is no biblical mandate not any scripture that can be used to prove the idea that having a beard is wrong. Jesus DID have a beard. To say that he did not is to reject both scriptural and historical accounts. I do like the idea of being clean shaven. I think it looks clean cut and sophisticated. I also like a well kept beard, I believe they can also look sophisticated. However, both of those positions are based on social and cultural norms, not on biblical precept. Have a bears, don’t have a bears, its your choice, but I do admonish people to be clean and well manicured.

  20. I once grew a long beard. All was well til someone asked me if I slept with it out or under the covers. Lost a lot of sleep trying to find out.

  21. It is fine to have a beard. If we wanted to be legalistic against it, we should be asking if we are allowed to shave our sideburns.

  22. Some people will argue with anything. It was a joke post!!!! Come on People! GROW UP! Ludicrous holier than thou with no sense of humor.

  23. Psalms 133:1 “BEARD”

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2 It is like the precious oil upon the head,Running down on the beard,
    “THE BEARD” of Aaron,

  24. I hadn’t ever looked up on things. I don’t know if I read it or if it’s one of those hear says. That Christ shaved faith a razor. I don’t know about the other comments.

    1. Troy Day I believe modern theology has turned to a walk between Christian liberty and Law. I see no biblical support and any verses regarding so would be just as relevant as circumcision

    2. Mike Partyka The early Apostolic era churches actually taught it was sinful for a man to shave his face.

  25. The Old Testament speaks of the Messiah pulling his beard, which meant shaved. The NT is not specific but I think a man looks better without facial hair. There is also a Scripture, I have to look, that says that the Messiah was clean shaven.

    1. Kyle Williams the ones who social drink on Sat eve and then get up Sunday morning trying to preach with NO power left in em

    2. Kyle Williams Most likely. Jesus was a Jew. Jewish men in the 1st C wore beards as a sign of their adult manhood. In their culture it was considered shameful for a man’s beard to be shaved. The Greeks/Romans had a different view, so for a Jewish man to be shaved was also considered trying to be like a Gentile. And that is one thing Jesus WASN’T accused of by his Jewish critics. ?

    3. Christopher Lance Dart I understand that.. I was referring to the churches that teach this extra biblical teachings as pharisees. Not literal pharisees but the same spirit ya know

    1. Ray E Horton nobody alive does all of us are sinners but the post asked if beards were against the bible which the only thing mentioned about beards in the bible is in leviticus I cant find any other verses that relate to the bible

    2. Ray E Horton Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. (NIV, Matthew 5:17–18)

  27. This happens when people put their doctrines, personal beliefs and their preachers above God, because they’re lazy to study the Bible by themselves and believe every kind of absurd and ridiculous doctrines.

    1. No, not the book of Romans, but the Roman soldiers who plucked Jesus’ beard…
      Isaiah 50:6 AMP
I turned My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not hide My face from insults and spitting.

    1. O course not, because it isn’t. The O.P. is really meaningless and silly. I suppose there might be legalists out there who believe otherwise, but they need to discover Jesus and who He really is.

    1. Troy Day – I had read in translation that Isaiah prophesied that Jesus had some of his beard pulled out. But when I looked at Isaiah in Ellenisti (miscalled Greek) I found no mention of a beard in chapter 5, verse 6. — In the NT Jesus does say that he came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets. And the Law of Moses does give a command for what to do with beards. So, if Jesus fulfilled that law, he had to have a beard to do so.

    1. James Molenaar I can assure you a few of them don’t. I’ve watched for a while now, seen some of the most immature and ignorant statements and post made here. Sucks too, I was hoping for
Actual Pentecostal discussions, encouragement, fellowship, and theology. Instead I’ve seen biblical error and blatant attacks against Pastors, Christians/the Church, the President, you name it. If they can bash it, they do. They meaning the admins and his blind followers. They even argue and divide too though.

    2. I suspect controversial and even immature and ignorant posts are probably put up to generate conversation. Conversation at any cost is not a direction I would go. I try to post nothing but things the Lord puts on My heart. I wish others would too.

    1. Troy Day if you’re saying that its true that churches teach against beards, that is true. If you are saying that they teach this on
On any kind of biblical foundation, that’s false.. because the word of God does not teach such a doctrine.

    2. Kyle Williams This is TRUE Some people really believe that and practice it What do you believe ?

    3. Troy Day I believe that any pastor that preaches a doctrine that is not supported by the word of God needs to go thru repentance from dead works and forsake his own religious tradition and get back to the bible.

    4. Kyle Williams What do you believe in relation to OP – some churches DO preach that you know

    5. Troy Day yes sir they do. Mostly so called “apostolic organizations.”Namely the UPC. Several of the “holiness standards” they impose on their congregants are just downright unscriptural and have to do with the opinions of modern day pharisees, who are in leadership. Opinions such as this one are pushed to the point where the people in these religious systems begin to imagine these are the laws of God and not the Bylaws of a Man-centric hierarchy.

  28. Read About beards in the Old Testament …….2Sa_10:4 Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
2Sa_10:5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
1Ch_19:5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

  29. Some churches need to start worrying about things that matter and quit watching the world go to hell while they are splitting hairs over stupid things like this.

And we wonder why the lost shake their heads and realize that in so many ways the modern day church is irrelevant and useless!
