National Monument to Honor Emmett Till Whose Murder Sparked the Civil Rights Movement
The family of Emmett Till gathered in Washington with civil rights leaders as President Biden announced a new national monument in Till’s honor Tuesday.
Till is the 14-year-old whose brutal lynching in 1955 is among America’s most tragic and shameful moments in history.
On what would have been Till’s 82nd birthday, the president signed a proclamation establishing a national monument in his and his mother’s honor. The monument will mark the brutal crime that became a turning point in America’s Civil Rights movement. “Only with truth comes healing, justice, repair, and another step forward toward forming a more perfect union,” Biden said.
