In addition to being a veteran of the Union Army, Bowles was a lawyer who practiced in Tennessee and in Natchez. He served as a member of the state House of Representatives from Adams County. Bowles was also a successful businessman, inventor, newspaper publisher, and philanthropist. Bowles' house is now owned by Larry and Brenda Holmes.
