House Speaker Kevin McCarthy succeeded in averting a government shutdown Saturday. However, Capitol Hill battles aren’t over as conservatives angry about government spending are now threatening to unseat McCarthy as House Speaker. Rep. Matt Gaetz said he intends to file a motion to vacate this week.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Laphonza Butler, a former labor leader and the president of the pro-choice group, EMILY’s List, to replace the late U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.
And a 3-year pandemic-era reprieve for payments on student loans has officially ended this month. Borrowers, many of whom have already received their first bill, must resume payments.
