State Correctional Institution – Smithfield (SCI Smithfield) is a closed-security correctional facility for men on the grounds of SCI-Huntingdon, near Huntingdon in the Allegheny Mountains. SCI Smithfield was opened in 1988 during a “growth spurt of the “bursting at the seams” correctional system in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

I received this email while we were up in New Jersey, and it comes from Chaplain Coulter who works at SCI Smithfield. It reads “Hello, our prison is a maximum security prison for men in Pennsylvania. We are the intake prison for the whole state. Men come here first for 28 days and then are sent to their home jails. (they are allowed to take their Bibles with them) we give out 8-12 Bibles a day and appreciate your consideration to send us as many Bibles as you’re able to. (we have plenty of Spanish Bibles) our current need is for English translations. Thank You and God Bless!” They need between 250-350 Bibles every month, how much of that need can we meet?

What a blessing it is to send Bibles to a place like this, they’re there for 28 days, and much of what transpires will set the tone for the rest of their sentence. To be able to put a King James Bible in their hands that can travel with them is exactly what they need, this is why Bibles Behind Bars was raised up in the first place.
