Karen Pence Talks Jan. 6, Fear, and Trusting in God: ‘I Wasn’t Afraid’
Former Second Lady Karen Pence is on a mission to inspire Americans to discern God’s calling for their lives, encouraging people to trust the Lord with important life decisions. Pence, author of the new book, “When It’s Your Turn to Serve: Experiencing God’s Grace in His Calling for Your Life,” said the text offers the behind-the-scenes story of some of the work she was able to do while her husband, Mike Pence, was vice president, and while he served as governor of Indiana.
But the book also has a much deeper meaning. “The whole point of the book is to … encourage the reader to be willing to step out and step up and serve when they feel God calling them,” she told CBN Digital. Pence said paying attention to the Lord’s calling has been an essential part of her family’s life and journey, as they have relied on God’s guidance to embark on gubernatorial and presidential races, with her husband also following the Lord’s leading to take the vice-presidential role.
“I want [people to] question … ‘Is God really calling me to this. … Does he really want me to do this?'” she said. Discerning and living out these promptings, of course, can be difficult, especially when people are resistant to a particular calling. Pence said some of the choices she initially resisted in the past have ended up proving to be God’s best for her and her family.
Pence also briefly spoke about the chaos unfolding at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. While she and her daughter were inside alongside her husband, she said they never felt fear. “That peace just settled on us,” she said. People always ask me, ‘Were you afraid?’ And I wasn’t afraid; none of us were really afraid.”
